If you own a newer Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Vogue, Jaguar, Land Rover Defender, or any Jaguar Land Rover model from around 2022 onwards with the new-style smart key, you may come across a message saying:
“Smart Key Deactivated” or “Key Not Recognised / Key Disconnected”.
This usually happens after a key has been locked inside the vehicle — and it’s not a fault. It’s actually a built-in security feature.
JLR designed the newer vehicles to automatically deactivate any key left inside the locked car.
Example scenario: You have two keys, one of them is accidentally left inside the car, you lock the vehicle and walk away. When you return and unlock the car, the key that was inside will no longer start the vehicle. This prevents a theft scenario where someone sees the key, smashes the window, grabs it, and simply drives off.
To bring that key back to life, you must have a working spare key.
How to Reactivate a Deactivated Smart Key
• Unlock the vehicle with the working key.
• Remove the deactivated key from inside.
• Lock the car.
• Unlock again using the working key.
• Start the engine.
This process usually re-enables the previously deactivated key, restoring normal functionality. If you only own one key and it has been deactivated, there’s unfortunately no way for the vehicle to re-authorise it.
In this case, the solution is to supply and install a new Keyless Vehicle Module (KVM), program two new keys, reactivate and re-add your existing key if possible, and remove any missing or unwanted keys.
If your car displays ‘Smart Key Deactivated’, try your spare key. If you don’t have one, call a qualified specialist who can replace the KVM, supply keys, and reprogram the system.
