Understanding Ultra-Wideband (UWB) in Jaguar and Land Rover Keys

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is an advanced short-range communication technology that transmits data across a wide frequency spectrum, usually between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz. Unlike Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, which rely on signal strength to estimate proximity, UWB calculates the exact time it takes for a signal to travel between the key and the vehicle. This enables the car to pinpoint the key’s position with centimetre-level accuracy, greatly improving both convenience and security.

From around 2018 to 2020, Jaguar and Land Rover began incorporating UWB technology into their Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) keys. Vehicles equipped with this system use multiple UWB antennas placed in the door handles, rear bumper, and cabin. These antennas continuously communicate with the key to determine its precise location. When the driver approaches, the system confirms that the key is nearby, allowing the car to unlock when the handle is touched. Once the key is detected inside, the start button activates the engine without needing to insert the key.

UWB also offers significant protection against relay attacks, a common method used by thieves to trick a vehicle into unlocking or starting remotely. Because UWB measures the exact distance rather than just signal strength, it can confirm whether the key is genuinely close to the car, making such attacks ineffective. This innovation not only enhances security but also ensures compliance with modern EU and UK safety standards.

Models like the Range Rover Evoque (L551), Range Rover (L460), Defender (L663), F-Pace, Velar, Discovery Sport, and newer F-Type models were among the first to feature UWB-enabled PEPS systems. Vehicles without UWB still allow keyless start but require pressing the unlock button manually and provide only partial relay protection.
