Range Rover smart keys can sometimes appear to stop working without warning. One of the most common reasons is automatic key deactivation, which is a built in security feature.

A smart key may become deactivated if it is accidentally left inside the vehicle when the tailgate, bootlid, or taildoor is closed while the alarm is armed. When this happens, the vehicle will no longer recognise that key until it is deliberately reactivated.

This behaviour is normal and designed to prevent the vehicle being unlocked unintentionally.

How to Reactivate a Deactivated Range Rover Smart Key

There are two official ways to reactivate the key.

Use an alternative key
Start the vehicle using another active smart key or an Activity Key if you have one. Once the vehicle starts, the previously deactivated key will automatically be reactivated.

Use the InControl Remote app
If no spare key is available, unlock the vehicle remotely using the InControl Remote smartphone application. This action also restores the deactivated key’s functionality.

Both methods are safe and do not require diagnostics or reprogramming.

When It Might Not Be Deactivation

Many owners describe this issue as the smart key not being detected. In some cases, the key has not been deactivated at all.

If the vehicle displays messages such as:

  • Smart key not detected

  • Key not found

  • Place key near steering column

The most likely cause is a flat key fob battery.

When the battery is weak or dead, the vehicle cannot detect the key wirelessly, even though the key itself is still programmed correctly.

What to Do If the Key Battery Is Flat

If your Range Rover is not detecting the key, check the key battery before assuming there is a fault.

You can follow our step by step guide here to confirm whether the issue is battery related and how to resolve it quickly.
