Why Your Evoque’s Smart Key Might Not Be Working

You press the button on your Range Rover Evoque’s smart key… nothing happens. Frustrating, right? Don’t worry—this is a common issue, and most of the time, it’s easy to fix.

1. Check the Key Fob Battery
The most common reason your Evoque’s smart key isn’t being detected is a weak or dead battery inside the fob.
To fix this, open the key fob using the emergency key or a small screwdriver, remove the old battery, and replace it with a fresh CR2032 battery. Make sure the positive side is facing up. This often solves the issue right away.

2. Watch for Signal Interference
Other electronic devices like phones, Wi-Fi routers, or even metal objects can block the signal between the key and your car.
Try stepping a few metres away from busy areas or turning off nearby electronics, then test the key again.

3. Use the Keyless Start Backup
If the car still doesn’t detect the key, use the backup method.
Place the key fob flat against the steering column with the buttons facing down. In some models, you may need to place it in the cup holder. This allows the car to read the chip directly and usually lets you start the engine.

4. Try a Spare Key
If you have a second key, try it. If the spare works, then your main key fob likely needs a battery or reprogramming.

5. Consider Reprogramming or Replacement
If a new battery doesn’t help and there’s no interference, the key may have lost its connection with the vehicle or become faulty.
You may need to get the key reprogrammed. A Land Rover dealer or a qualified auto locksmith can do this quite quickly.

6. Check for Error Messages
Look at the display on your dashboard. Messages like “Smart Key Not Found” could give clues. For example, there’s a technical service bulletin (TSB) out for this exact problem on some 2023 models.
