If your Range Rover key is no longer working as expected—such as failing to unlock the doors or start the vehicle—it may not be faulty. In many cases, the issue can be quickly resolved.

1. Check the Key Fob Battery

A weak or dead battery is the most common cause of an unresponsive key fob. Over time, the battery loses charge and may no longer transmit a strong enough signal.

What to do:

  • Replace the battery with a new one (usually a CR2032 coin cell).

  • Ensure the battery is inserted correctly with the positive side facing up.

  • After replacing, test the key by locking and unlocking the vehicle.

2. Interference from Nearby Electronics

Strong electromagnetic signals from other devices (such as mobile phones, laptops or other key fobs) can sometimes interfere with the key’s signal.

What to do:

  • Move away from large electronic devices or power sources and try again.

  • Avoid storing the key near electronics when not in use.

3. Smart Key Deactivation

If the key was left inside the vehicle when the tailgate, bootlid or taildoor was closed while the alarm was armed, it may have been automatically deactivated as a safety feature.

What to do:

  • Start the vehicle using another active smart key or Activity Key, if available.

  • Alternatively, use the InControl Remote app to unlock the vehicle and reactivate the key.

4. Faulty Key or Vehicle Receiver

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, the problem may lie with the key itself or the vehicle’s receiver unit.

What to do:

  • Try your spare key. If it works, the original key may need to be reprogrammed or replaced.

  • If neither key works, the issue could be with the vehicle’s receiver. Contact an authorised Land Rover service centre.
